Where do you get the "Little Known Facts?"

Facts may be provided by restaurant owners, chefs, employees, or just about anyone who loves the food business.

Why have a FoodHawk.com?

FoodHawk.com is single-focused. It truly is all about food, and covers hundreds of restaurants, fresh and branded food products and other food related resources. It is very easy to use and navigate, and provides information not currently available on any local or national food website (i.e. searchable menus). But that's just for starters. We will respond to the needs of our users and restaurateurs, and we will listen!

What is FoodHawk.com?

FoodHawk.com is an online restaurant guide with searchable menus and comprehensive information on nearly every kind of food resource.

How will you keep listings up-to-date?

Listings are maintained using several methods:

FoodHawk.com has total access to administration of the site data.
Restaurants have administration access to all but photos and descriptions, and can make changes to data and menus. All changes pass through a Foodhawk.com review and are proofed before upload to the site. Our dedicated staff will also respond to changes e-mailed to FoodHawk.com.
So our information is as updated as possible, our band of "little hawks" will fly around the region, observing changes, additions and news.
FoodHawk.com will also rely on our users, the restaurants and the food resource community. Anyone may log in or send emails directly to FoodHawk.com.

How have you determined which restaurants will be included?

We welcome the addition of any and all restaurants in the region. Eventually we want to list every restaurant in the region.

We will try to enlist them by:

Using all current promotional materials including "best of" lists, and adding to our database any time we become aware of other restaurants (i.e. frequent advertisers in local media)?
Drawing on personal experiences that we, and our network of contacts, have with area restaurants and owners?
Sponsoring "features" in local print media.

Advertising/Sponsorships

: I don't see many ads on line. What's up?; Our policy is to eliminate pop-up ads so they will not interfere with your use of the website - especially your focus on restaurants, food resource information, and making dining decisions. It is our desire to have targeted food related and life style ads that are not invasive, but informative, that will make you want to come back to FoodHawk.com as much for the ads as the information on restaurants and food resources.

Basic site use

How do I submit questions?

You can submit a question by using the form at the bottom of this page or you can go to the contact page and submit an inquiry.

What does "global search" mean and what does it do?

When a user enters any word under "restaurant name," "menu item," or "menu ingredient" and clicks the "search" key, a complete database search will be conducted and all matches will be listed. For example: if you enter "fettuccine" all restaurants serving that dish will be listed. You may then refine or restrict the search by using the "area" or "neighborhood" on the advanced search page.

What happens if you misspell something?

You will be given an opportunity to amend your original search, or start a completely new search.

If you are unsure how to spell a particular restaurant or menu item, you can simply enter a portion of the word and let the FoodHawk.com search engine try to locate it. For example, if you wish to locate the restaurant Cipollina but you're not sure how it is spelled, simply enter "cip" for a list of all restaurants and items featuring "cip" in their title. Likewise, for the dish osso bucco, you can enter "oss" for a list of restaurants that serve that dish.

What does the "Hear About" button do?

The "Hear About" button allows you to hear a 60-90 second message from a restaurant's owner or chef, giving the restaurateur the opportunity to promote excitement or special cuisine of the restaurant. It provides a chance to speak directly to the audience.

Am I charged for using the site?

There are no fees for visitors to search or browse the site. Restaurants pay a monthly "flat" fee with no "per hit" charges so click away.

Why don't you rate restaurants?

FoodHawk wants to collect data before offering ratings. In lieu of ratings current site indicators include:

Restaurants with "silver" or "gold plate" icons indicate years in business
"Local Favorites"
"Award Winning Chefs" includes all chefs who have won recognized awards
"Menu changes frequently" indicates attention to details
"Notable Desserts" indicates special talent for sweets
"Notable Wine List" indicates pride in offerings
"Most popular dish"
"Chefs Recommendation" is the chef's choice
"Outstanding Wait Staff" indicates dedication to service and a totally positive dining experience

It is our goal that these features will assist you in making the best possible dining decisions. Please wait patiently for future ratings.

Menus

: How can I find out which restaurants serve a particular dish, like gumbo?; The "global search" line on the home page will help you search for either menu items or menu ingredients. Just type in your request, click "search" and a display of all restaurants that serve gumbo will appear.

Can we update our own page?

Restaurants can update their own pages using an easy administration package with a secure access password. Access is granted to all the data except for descriptions and photos. For proofing purposes, changes will pass through a filter at FoodHawk.com prior to being uploaded to the site.

What do the "$" signs mean?

The number of "$" signs represents FoodHawk.com's estimate of a restaurant's average entree price. Since you have access to the full menu you can better estimate your bill prior to selecting a restaurant.

Searching

: How do "neighborhoods" differs from "areas?"; "Neighborhood" searches differ from an "area" search in that they are concentrated on specific smaller geographies. They also have been given "names" that people should be familiar with. I am sure we have missed some neighborhoods, so please email judy@foodhawk.com and let us know which ones we've missed.

: What is a "Time and Day" search?; Have you ever wondered which restaurants are open downtown for Saturday lunch? Now you can find out quickly and easily. On the top right paragraph of the Home Page, click "time and meal" search. That will take you to the advanced search page and you can take it from there.

: What are all the ways I can search on FoodHawk.com?; We have provided many features to help you refine your search, including:

FoodHawk.com has endeavored to make neighborhood searches truly relevant. We will continue to fine tune this aspect. The "special features" search has many terms you'll be familiar with and some new ones like "menu changes frequently," "award winning chef," "outstanding wait staff," "kids eat free," "specialty drinks" and more.

There is a new "time and day" search to help you find when restaurants are open. For instance, Saturday lunch in the downtown area.

Advance searches are endless. Go to the advanced search page and see if you can find your favorite restaurant several different ways.
